Many claims are made currently in the MQB landscape of the “ultimate” catch can set up, MANY offerings exist. The simple fact remains. NONE of them actually address both sides of the PCV System The LOW side (PCV), and High side (CCV) are two different systems within the factory PCV system. The LOW side, is drawing vacuum directly from the intake ports in the cylinder head, and under idle, cruise, and engine braking is using this vacuum to draw oil vapors, and crankcase gases away from the crankcase to help purge it under vacuum conditions. When the engine transitions to boost a check valve is then actuated, and the LOW side is NO LONGER functioning. At this point, the HIGH side or CCV comes into play. This uses the intake on your turbocharger, and the vacuum generated there to draw oil vapors, and crankcase gases away from the crankcase to help purge it under boost conditions. These are TWO distinctly separate systems built into the factory PCV. Both of them introduce oil into the intake which is bad, the low side does so by depositing the oil directly into the intake ports causing carbon build-up, and the high side does do by pulling oil into the turbo intake, then pushing it throughout your entire charge tract including the intercooler before it makes its way into the intake. Both are bad, BOTH need to be addressed. This is where the VTT COMPLETE catch can system comes into play, we change all that.
Now that you understand how the system works. Do not be fooled by others claiming “Full” or “Ultimate” catch can system. Every single catch can on the MK7 market currently is focused on the HIGH side only. This means EVEN WITH a catch can install on your MK7, ANY time you are under a vacuum situation (Idle, Cruise, engine braking, etc) You have NO oil control to your engine. Manifold vacuum is drawing oil mist and crankcase gasses directly into your intake ports. The reason being, taking control of the low side is difficult, and can be hard to achieve. There are other pitfalls. If you put too much vacuum directly into the crankcase it can be just as bad as not having enough. We used specifically sized vacuum lines, and a custom Billet VTT Vacuum Relief valve to keep the Vacuum right where it should be, and not overwhelm the system
With the VTT COMPLETE Catch can set up, we completely address the low AND high sides, by separating them, and running each side into its own chamber in the catch can. We do this using a custom PCV plate, that organizes the HIGH and LOW sides into nice short hose runs and uses strategically placed check valves to keep boost out of your crankcase, and in the manifold where it belongs. Our opening in the PCV plate is baffled, and the plate chambers themselves are filled with Stainless mesh to knock down any oil mist, and the catch can is also filled with this mesh. This means any oil is knocked out of the air BEFORE it gets to your intake ports or turbocharger inlet.
We completely redesigned what people think of then they see an MQB catch can set up. VOLUME in the PCV system is just as important as the vacuum itself. Every set on the market runs lines across the ENTIRE engine bay, this long run, mean vacuum drop, and volume loss equals poor PCV operation. Our system mounts the can directly over the cold side of the turbocharger against the firewall, and the longest hose run is only a little over 9″. We also use all custom CNC aluminum Banjo fittings, and Banjo Bolts, even our check valves are custom fitted into banjo Fittings. The -6 Banjo that pulls vacuum for the low side also serves as a place to run a boost tap if wanted. This makes it easy to run a boost reference for BOV, Boost gauge, 1:1 FPR reference, etc.
This system works PERFECTLY with our VTT Crankcase breaker that replaces your oil cap, which will give you an even larger amount of venting under full boost as it uses a 1″ ball. Other systems are so poorly designed when you add a crankcase breather you get oil being pushed out due to crankcase pressure not being held in check under boost. This system provides the ultimate in crankcase breathing for both the low and high sides!
